Learning to Live After Cancer

Life after a long battle with cancer is by no means an easy thing. Being confronted with the idea of death and losing friends and family, feeling weakened or defeated after treatments, or even trying to figure out how to prevent cancer in both your and your loved one’s lives can be incredibly stressful. When you hear the wonderful news that you have beaten cancer, the first thing you need to do is:

Live

Many cancer patients have lived with ideas of death and battled through many depressing feelings during their illness. When you finally hear the news that you have beaten this horrible disease, you need to let go of any ideation of death and focus on life once again. Renew your goals. Get involved in those hobbies you once loved or take up new ones. Most importantly, now is the time to reconnect with your family and friends who you may not have seen for a while and who want to take part in your triumph over this deadly disease.

Give your Body Time to Recover

The prescriptions, the chemotherapy and the hospital visits can certainly leave one feeling weakened and drained for a period of time. As exciting as it is to have a new clean bill of health, be sure to relax and take it easy. People will undoubtedly want to contact you and celebrate in your success, but pace yourself at first. Don’t feel too overwhelmed and be sure to take some time out for you.

Think About Living a More Natural Lifestyle

One of the most important things that cancer and cancer-free persons need to do is acknowledge that our lifestyle can help either contribute to or lessen our chances of having cancer. We all know that stopping smoking, drinking little to no alcohol and not being around toxic substances will greatly reduce our chances of cancer, but there are other things we can do too, such as:

  • Focus on eating a raw, whole foods diet. The more organic and more fresh the food, the better. Fruits and vegetables are key in helping one fight cancer.

  • Exercise. Any form of exercise will help keep our body’s functioning at optimal levels, as well as combat stress (which is a great contributor to a number of illnesses – not just cancer!)

  • Stay positive. Don’t let negative feelings or self doubt get in the way of achieving your goals in life.

Share your Knowledge

One of the best things you can do is to spread what you know about cancer and how to fight it with others. Share your personal story about how you have fought and overcome cancer. This will inspire both those who are sick and who are well to think more positively about it and help give them the tools to fight against and prevent it. You can do this by joining social and support groups for cancer patients, attending cancer-fighting events (such as a walk to end cancer) or starting up a blog on the internet that details your experiences with the disease. Share the highs and lows of your journey, and learn about others’ stories as well. Almost everyone has been touched by this disease in some way, so reminding us that friends and strangers alike have gone through the same pain, suffering and confusion that comes with cancer only helps us understand it and fight against it all the more.
